Open BI Pentaho “Business intelligence” software goes GPL

Pentaho Corp. has released its Linux-compatible, open source business intelligence (BI) software under a GNU General Public License Version 2 (GPLv2) license. The license applies to the version 2 alpha release of the Pentaho BI Platform, as well as future versions, says the company.

The Pentaho BI Platform is the foundational infrastructure that underlies Pentaho’s Open BI Suite. Previous versions had been released under the Mozilla Public License (MPL). The components that will now be licensed under GPL are the Platform engine core, engine services, engine security, repository, and UI foundation. The new licensing does not apply to modules such as Pentaho Analysis (Mondrian), Pentaho Data Integration (formerly Kettle), Pentaho Reporting (formerly JFreeReport), and Pentaho Data Mining (Weka), says Pentaho. However, in the future, Pentaho will require third-parties who want to contribute code to these components to release the code under GPL.

Pentaho bills its Open BI Suite as “the world’s most popular open source BI suite.” The software offers OLAP (on-line analytical processing) reporting, analysis, dashboards, data mining, and data integration features. Last Fall, Pentaho announced version 1.6, adding a BI metadata layer that lets IT develop intelligence road maps that business users can then use to build reports. It also added a thin-client AJAX-based reporting interface for streamlining the creation of ad hoc queries and reports without requiring input from IT.

Pentaho is providing a FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) exception to its GPL licenses, permitting Pentaho and other organizations that distribute the software under other specified Open Source Initiative (OSI) certified licenses to be exempt from some of the GPLv2 requirements. According to Pentaho, the FLOSS exception simplifies distribution.

In explaining its move to GPL, Pentaho cites a freshmeat.org statistic that more than 60 percent of open source projects tracked on the site are GPL-licensed. The company also noted the precedents set by other commercial open source vendors including MySQL, Alfresco, SugarCRM, as well as by Java and the Linux kernel, all of which are GPL-licensed projects.

One advantage of cloud computing is that it’s an expert’s job to keep the centralized computing infrastructure up and running. But even experts have problems, and that’s what’s going on Tuesday with Google’s App Engine.

The service has been having outages Tuesday, according to a mailing list posting Tuesday. App Engine, launched in April and still in “preview release” mode, is a service that lets people create interactive Web applications written in the Python programming language.

“We’ve experienced several outages during the past 12 hours, the most recent of which started at 6:30 a.m. PDT and is still ongoing. During these outages, a significant percentage of requests resulted in errors. The errors are related to usage of the Datastore,” the note said. “We’re working hard to determine the cause of these outages and will continue updating as we make progress.”

Google didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about the issue.

Update 5:25 p.m. PDT: Google fixed the problem, according to an update notice Google pointed out…

“At around 1:40 p.m. we were able to isolate the issue, and requests are currently serving normally,” the update said. “This outage was the result of a bug in our datastore servers and was triggered by a particular class of queries. We have isolated the bug and we’re currently working on a fix. Going forward, we’re also working to further isolate queries so that in the future a bug like this won’t affect the stability of the system as a whole.”

Technorati has explored selling ads for third party sites for some time, but this is the first time they’ve opened the service up to anyone. Unlike Glam and Federated Media, they will take all comers, and say they expect blogs, from the large players on down through the long tail, will find they do a better job monetizing sites than the current options.

Ads are sold on a CPM basis. They will not make revenue guarantees, says Jalichandra, but the split between parties is negotiable. He declined to state what rates have been negotiated with beta partners. This is similar to what Six Apart promises, which is also targeting the long tail of blogs.

Jalichandra also says Technorati is uniquely positioned to sell ads at premium rates, even through small blogs, because they will be able to use descriptive tags/keywords, along with their existing blog indexing technology, to better match ads with content…”

It is heartening to read about the inventory that they are expected to carry, and the higher CPM that they will manage to generate, hopefully.

AOL Radio won a coveted Apple Design Award for a version of the player designed for the iPhone. The AOL developed application was highlighted during the “iPhone Developer Showcase” portion of the annual awards ceremony last night at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco and won the award for “Best Entertainment Application”.

AOL Radio for iPhone gives iPhone users free access to more than 200 AOL Radio stations and 150 CBS Radio stations while on the go. Among other features, the player automatically adjusts the bandwidth of the stream based on connection speed, and automatically highlights local CBS Radio stations based on the user’s current location. The award represents a significant milestone in AOL’s efforts to “get back to the Mac.”

Built using Apple’s Beta iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK), the new application gives users immediate, free access to over 350 online radio stations, including 150 local CBS RADIO stations and custom channels plus more than 200 AOL Radio channels.  The AOL Radio iPhone application will be available as a free download with the launch of Apple’s App Store. 

AOL Radio for iPhone leverages iPhone’s Core Location framework to detect a user’s location and automatically display CBS RADIO stations nearest to the user.  Additionally, AOL Radio for iPhone automatically adapts to the current connection speed of the device providing low-bandwidth streams when on a cellular network versus higher quality audio for WiFi connections.

Google has added support for Firefox 3 to Gears, the tool that allows web-based apps to function offline. Support for Firefox 3 was first announced on the feature list for Google Gears version 0.3, and speaking with Cnet, Google engineer Aaron Boodman confirmed that “Gears for Firefox 3, as of today, is available for all users.”

Gears already supports Firefox 2, but the lack of support in recent release candidates has proved a headache for early adopters.

The announcement means Gears is close to supporting all major browsers, with Opera extending support to its popular Mobile browser and Google working on a version for Safari.

The latest version of Firefox is due for release later this month, and is currently at Release Candidate 2.

In an interview with PC Pro, Tristan Nitot, president of Mozilla Europe said he wanted to see Microsoft and Google rally around a single standard for offline apps, with Gears merging with HTML 5’s standard for offline caching - the standard Firefox 3 currently uses.

In what appears to be an attempt to provoke Apple to reconsider its currently passive position on the severity of the dubbed as “carpet bomb” flaw, a working Proof of Concept exploit code has been released at Liu Die Yu’s security blog :
Nitesh Dhanjani discovered that Safari for Windows puts downloads automatically to Desktop and argued this can potentially make a mess of Desktop, naming it the effect of “Safari Carpet Bomb”. Later Microsoft issued an advisory stating “remote code execution on all supported versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista” and “Aviv Raff for working with us and reporting the blended threat of Safari and Microsoft Internet Explorer”. Aviv Raff posted on his blog “Safari pwns Internet Explorer”, clarifying “this combined attack also exploits an old vulnerability in Internet Explorer that I’ve already reported to them a long long time ago”.

The old vulnerability that Aviv Raff reported to Microsoft long time ago is described in two articles by Aviv Raff: IE7 DLL-load hijacking Code Execution Exploit PoC, and Internet Explorer 7 - Still Spyware Writers Heaven, both dating back to 2006(yeah that’s really “a long long time ago”). This vulnerability lies in Windows Internet Explorer loading program library files(DLL) from user’s Desktop instead of its own library file folder(usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32), when filenames are set to some specific values.
