Mozilla security chief Window Snyder (left) has confirmed the existence of a serious code execution vulnerability in the brand-new Firefox 3.0 browser.

Snyder’s confirmation follows a public warning by TippingPoint’s ZDI (Zero Day Initiative) that the flaw could lead to PC takeover hijacks if a user simply surfs to a rigged Web site with Firefox.

On the Mozilla security blog, Snyder said the bug impacts Firefox versions 2.x and 3.0:

This issue is currently under investigation. To protect our users, the details of the issue will remain closed until a patch is made available. There is no public exploit, the details are private, and so the current risk to users is minimal.

At Mozilla we appreciate any report of security issues because that is how we make the browser stronger and more secure. The best way to keep Firefox users safe is to report the issues directly to Mozilla as TippingPoint has chosen to, and to wait to release details until a fix is available.

The vulnerability was sold to TippingPoint ZDI a few hours after Mozilla’s shipped the final release of Firefox 3.0. Also see this USA Today piece on Snyder’s efforts to harden Firefox against hacker attacks.

Google has added support for Firefox 3 to Gears, the tool that allows web-based apps to function offline. Support for Firefox 3 was first announced on the feature list for Google Gears version 0.3, and speaking with Cnet, Google engineer Aaron Boodman confirmed that “Gears for Firefox 3, as of today, is available for all users.”

Gears already supports Firefox 2, but the lack of support in recent release candidates has proved a headache for early adopters.

The announcement means Gears is close to supporting all major browsers, with Opera extending support to its popular Mobile browser and Google working on a version for Safari.

The latest version of Firefox is due for release later this month, and is currently at Release Candidate 2.

In an interview with PC Pro, Tristan Nitot, president of Mozilla Europe said he wanted to see Microsoft and Google rally around a single standard for offline apps, with Gears merging with HTML 5’s standard for offline caching - the standard Firefox 3 currently uses.

You are used to paying extra if you use up your cell phone minutes, but will you be willing to pay extra if your home computer goes over its Internet allowance?

Time Warner Cable Inc. customers — and, later, others — may have to, if the company’s test of metered Internet access is successful.

On Thursday, new Time Warner Cable Internet subscribers in Beaumont, Texas, will have monthly allowances for the amount of data they upload and download. Those who go over will be charged $1 per gigabyte, a Time Warner Cable executive told the Associated Press.

Metered billing is an attempt to deal fairly with Internet usage, which is very uneven among Time Warner Cable’s subscribers, said Kevin Leddy, Time Warner Cable’s executive vice president of advanced technology.

Just 5 percent of the company’s subscribers take up half of the capacity on local cable lines, Leddy said. Other cable Internet service providers report a similar distribution.

“We think it’s the fairest way to finance the needed investment in the infrastructure,” Leddy said.

Metered usage is common overseas, and other U.S. cable providers are looking at ways to rein in heavy users. Most have download caps, but some keep the caps secret so as not to alarm the majority of users, who come nowhere close to the limits. Time Warner Cable appears to be the first major ISP to charge for going over the limit: Other companies warn, then suspend, those who go over.

Phone companies are less concerned about congestion and are unlikely to impose metered usage on DSL customers, because their networks are structured differently.

Time Warner’s tiers will range from $29.95 a month for relatively slow service at 768 kilobits per second and a 5-gigabyte monthly cap to $54.90 per month for fast downloads at 15 megabits per second and a 40-gigabyte cap. Those prices cover the cable portion of subscription bundles that include video or phone services. Both downloads and uploads will count toward the monthly cap.

A possible stumbling block for Time Warner Cable is that customers have had little reason so far to pay attention to how much they download from the Internet, or know much traffic makes up a gigabyte. That uncertainty could scare off new subscribers.

Those who mainly do Web surfing or e-mail have little reason to pay attention to the traffic caps: a gigabyte is about 3,000 Web pages, or 15,000 e-mails without attachments. But those who download movies or TV shows will want to pay attention. A standard-definition movie can take up 1.5 gigabytes, and a high-definition movie can be 6 to 8 gigabytes.

Time Warner Cable subscribers will be able to check out their data consumption on a “gas gauge” on the company’s Web page.

The company won’t apply the gigabyte surcharges for the first two months. It has 90,000 customers in the trial area, but only new subscribers will be part of the trial.

Billing by the hour was common for dial-up service in the U.S. until AOL introduced an unlimited-usage plan in 1996. Flat-rate, unlimited-usage plans have been credited with encouraging consumer Internet use by making billing easy to understand.

“The metered Internet has been tried and tested and rejected by the consumers overwhelmingly since the days of AOL,” information-technology consultant George Ou told the Federal Communications Commission at a hearing on ISP practices in April.

Nine out of ten businesses that have launched virtual worlds saw them fail in 18 months or less, according to a recent research from Gartner, which faulted companies for getting hung up on the technology rather than thinking about how people use it.

“Businesses have learned some hard lessons,” says Steve Prentice, vice president and fellow at Gartner. “They need to realize that virtual worlds mark the transition from Web pages to Web places and a successful virtual presence starts with people, not physics.”

The adoption of virtual worlds for the enterprise began picking up steam this year, buoyed by the success of Second Life, a 3-D environment in the consumer space where people interact with one another as avatars (virtual representations of themselves).

Other consultancies, such as Forrester, predicted virtual worlds would rival the internet in overall importance to businesses.

Despite the high failure rate the research did indicate virtual worlds will catch on as companies understand what types of use cases work best for implementing them. By 2012, around 70 percent of organizations will have set up private virtual worlds, Gartner predicts. Virtual worlds set up for employees to collaborate internally will have a high success rate because of “lower expectations, clearer objectives and better constraints.”

The other upside to virtual worlds for the enterprise: cost. According to Gartner, the cost of implementing a corporate virtual platform averages $50,000, and cheaper trials can cost $5,000. The report argues this low-cost will encourage more experimentation by businesses.

Google is considering running illustrated advertisements alongside the results of Web queries for pictures, moving beyond its text-based ad business. Matching graphical-display ads with image searches “represents a large opportunity, and there’s lot of potential for advertising revenue there,” Marissa Mayer, a Google vice president, said.

Google is seeking new sources of revenue as growth slows for the four-line text ads that generate almost all of its sales. We haven’t found a proper way to monetize image search to date,” said Mayer, who oversees search products. “You may see us roll out an ads-image search in the future, but when we do you’ll know that’s because we found a way that ultimately enhances user happiness with the product.”

Google calculated in 2006 that it was giving up as much as $200 million a year by not including text advertisements with its image search results, and that figure has probably increased since, Mayer said. Trials showed that text ads drove people away from conducting image searches, and Google dropped that idea.

Display ads may work better with image searches because they seem more natural to people looking for pictures, Mayer said. While the company has done mock-ups of how it might present the ads, it hasn’t tested them on users, she said.

News Source Bloomberg

My question: Can they do that without violating copyright and ownership rights of image owners?

MySpace launched Data Availability on Thursday, and yesterday Facebook Connect.

Why this flurry of activity in opening up APIs for 3rd party apps? All these initiatives will allow securely sending personal profile data, including friend lists, presence/status information, etc., to third party applications. The primary benefit of these services is to allow users to maintain a single friends list and to coordinate social activities across different sites that perform different services.

“The reason these companies are are rushing to get products out the door is because whoever is a player in this space is likely to control user data over the long run. If users don’t have to put profile and friend information into multiple sites, they will gravitate towards one site that they identify with, and then allow other sites to access that data. The desire to own user identities over the long run is also causing the big Internet companies, in my opinion, to rush to become OpenID issuers (but not relying parties).”

While the motivations are good (I don’t need to sign up everytime I visit a new website), there are bound to be privacy issues. Wait for one 3rd party to mess it up, willingly or unwillingly.

And the biggest gain for Google? They would now be able to target ads on individual profile level. Is that good? I am not too sure how much info I’d like to share with anyone, be it Google, Facebook, Myspace, Yahoo, Twitter…

Let’s wait and see.

In this social networking tools clutter, it is a pain to sift through the information that you really “may” care for. A few weeks back, I was ranting off on why I will not use twitter. And then I may feel a lot older when I get into the FB or Myspace forums. LinkedIn still remains my favorite, and the one I find most useful in my professional capacity.

Anyway, I digress. Two recent posts (on webware and techcrunch) made me look at this browser plugin called Yoono, for discovering and sharing Web content and to help track your friends’ activities. The tool integrates with several popular social networks and microblogging services including <a href="http://www.twitter.com/"class="external-link" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.twitter.com/');">Twitter, letting you access and interact with the communities of all of them in one place.

While you are surfing, Yoono instantly suggests what others have discovered: websites, people and articles. You can create a rich scrapbook of your favorite stuff with the new “Buzz It!” feature, one-click grab and share videos, photos and texts from any web page. Yoono keeps your scrapbook and original Firefox bookmarks synchronized across your computers.

In a nutshell: Yoono is a browser sidebar that will aggregate your social network upates and allow you to update all statuses at once. In addition, while you surf, Yoono displays a list of other web pages that are “people-rated” - others have classified them in their favorites. You can also find other users who have a particular web page in their favorites.

See a demo:
If you’re an avid Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr user, they you’ll need to download this free app to manage your accounts. Check out Yoono.com, but watch the video below first to see what it can do for you (source: techiediva).

The UI is really neat and clean, looks impressive. It is also impressive how much has been packed into a plugin. I am sure designing such an app is a challenge - whom to target, what features to bring in, what to leave out. Overall, I am quite impressed. I may end up actually using it!

Citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal reported early Friday that the world’s largest software maker may be preparing to go straight to Internet pioneer Yahoo’s shareholders. An announcement was “likely” to come Friday, according to the report, though the newspaper said its sources cautioned that Microsoft may delay.

Chief Executive Steve Ballmer told employees in a company assembly Thursday that he knows how much he’d spend to buy Yahoo and accelerate his company’s Internet play.

“We’re willing to pay for that at some level, and beyond that level we’re not willing to pay for it. I know exactly what I think Yahoo is worth to me,” the executive said. “I won’t go a dime above, and I will go to what I think it’s worth if that gets the deal done.”

But he didn’t offer a figure, and he didn’t say whether Microsoft is considering raising its unsolicited bid, worth $44.6 billion at the time it was made in early February.

The offer is currently worth about $42.4 billion, or $29.48 per share, based on Microsoft Corp.’s closing stock price Thursday. Yahoo Inc. has rejected the offer, saying it undervalues the company. Microsoft’s board has been considering whether to raise the bid to as much as $33 per share, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Ballmer didn’t provide any new insight into the company’s efforts to buy the Silicon Valley pioneer during the meeting at Microsoft’s Redmond, Wash., headquarters, but he did indicate that an end to months of speculation was near.

“We ought to announce something in relatively short order,” Ballmer told employees.

His comments were first reported by Silicon Alley Insider, an online technology news site, and confirmed by a Microsoft spokesman.

Ballmer added that buying Yahoo is just one of many moving parts in the software maker’s strategy to compete with Google Inc. in search and Web advertising, and that if neither a friendly nor a hostile deal “look good,” he’s willing to walk away.

Microsoft’s board met Wednesday but reached no decision on a next step, the Journal reported. The software maker had given Yahoo until last weekend to agree to a deal or face the prospect of an ugly proxy fight.

Meanwhile, Yahoo is exploring a possible advertising partnership with Internet search leader Google Inc. or a merger with the online operations of Time Warner Inc.’s AOL as possible defenses if Microsoft tries a hostile takeover.

Impressed by a two-week test completed last month, Yahoo could firm up a long-term deal within a week, according to the Journal. Any alliance between Yahoo and Google would face intense antitrust scrutiny, however, because the two companies control more than 80 percent of the U.S. market for search advertising.

Yahoo and Google hope to allay those concerns by structuring their deal so their rivals, including Microsoft, could participate in an auction-based system, the Journal said.

In actual fact, the truth of the matter was a little more convoluted. All I could see was that this application opened up a popup, which (every now and again) would just happen to be an advert for Zango. Hardly Earth shattering, but of course it did switch people on to the fact that they needed to be careful which applications they gave permission to access their data while on Facebook.

Well, a few months on and it looks like the BBC had a coder create an application (in three hours or less) that could swipe a whole pile of data on both you and your friends, before mailing it back home to base. I can’t stress enough - when it comes to social networking sites, NEVER post anything you wouldn’t feel comfortable posting on an otherwise open and accessible site such as your blog, personal website, whatever. I have pages on Myspace, Facebook, Orkut and a whole bunch of others - and there is NOTHING on them that you couldn’t find elsewhere. There is no hidden treasure trove of data to mine, and so I don’t care what happens to it because it’s all out there in the public domain anyway. This is what I’ve been telling people for the longest time, and it works.

The hacker in this case has been able set up a malicious application that can steal details of not only your information but the people you’re connected with. This is because in Facebook, applications have permission to ‘walk the tree’ of your friend contact details, letting the apps do things like populate the list of people for you to forward to, when you choose to “<a href="http://conversationhub.com/2008/04/03/forward-thisand-see-what-happens/"onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://conversationhub.com/2008/04/03/forward-thisand-see-what-happens/');" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://conversationhub.com/2008/04/03/forward-thisand-see-what-happens/');">forward this and see what happens.”

We have discovered a way to steal the personal details of you and all your Facebook friends without you knowing.

The article is worth reading. Wow, good job British hax0rz! I won’t say “the sky is falling” because this has been pretty well-known among the geek-o-rati for a long time. BBC notes MySpace apps run on MySpace’s servers, giving MySpace a much clearer idea of what an application is doing with the data.

Perhaps the media attention this is sure to draw will move FB to a more secure model. One can hope.

A team of engineers at the University of California at Berkeley has developed a technique for transmitting medical images via cellphones. This potentially could bring medical imaging to the ‘three-quarters of the world’s population which has no access to ultrasounds, X-rays, magnetic resonance images, and other medical imaging technology.’ The lead researcher said that this new system would make imaging technology inexpensive and accessible in non-industrialized countries. As medical images are usually pretty large, I was a little bit skeptical when I first read the UC Berkeley news release. But as the researchers have found a way to reduce these images to a mere kilobytes, it can actually be feasible. But read more about this brilliant idea…

You can see above the system configuration used for “the breast cancer tumors patient self-test screening. Outlined arrows indicate optional reporting of results to the patient.” (Credit: UC Berkeley, link to a larger version)

And you can see above how this technique could be used for breast cancer detection. On the left, you can see “the DAD [data acquisition device] of the system with two types of gel representing a breast cancer tumor surrounded by normal breast tissue.” The right part shows “econstructed result as it was displayed on the screen of a commercial cellular phone. Warm colors represent higher conductivity regions that are typical of breast cancer lesions.” (Credit: UC Berkeley, link to a larger version)

This research has been led by Boris Rubinsky, professor of bioengineering and mechanical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, who also works at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. By the way, this university also has issued its own news release about this imaging technique. Rubinsky worked with PhD student Yair Granot and post-doctoral researcher Antoni Ivorra.

Before going further, let’s first look at how medical imaging is done today. “Most medical imaging devices, said Rubinsky, consist of three essential components: the data acquisition hardware that is connected to the patient, the image processing software and a monitor to display the image. When these components are combined into one unit, machine parts often become redundant, substantially increasing the cost of the device, he said.”

This leads him to break this model. “Rubinsky and his team came up with the novel idea of physically separating these components so that the most complicated element — the processing software used to reconstruct the raw data into a meaningful image — can reside at an offsite central location, presumably in a large center where resources are available for its operation and maintenance. This central location would be used to service multiple remote sites where far simpler machines collect the raw data from the patients.”

And this where the cellphone comes in. “The phone, hooked up to the data acquisition device, would transmit the raw data to the central server where the information would be used to create an image. The server would then relay the image back to the cell phone, where it can be viewed on the cell phone’s screen. ‘This design significantly lowers the cost of medical imaging because the apparatus at the patient site is greatly simplified, and there is no need for personnel highly trained in imaging processing,’ said Ivorra.”

This new medical imaging technique has been published on April 30, 2008 in the open access journal Public Library of Science ONE (PLoS ONE) under the title “A New Concept for Medical Imaging Centered on Cellular Phone Technology.” Here is a link to this article, from which the above images have been picked.

Please read it to discover the potential limitations, such as cellphone compatibility. Here is the final summary. “This study demonstrates the feasibility of using a cellular phone as an integrated part of a medical imaging system in which a robust and independent DAD is connected to the imaging processing site through the cell phone. We believe that this concept has the potential for decreasing the complexity of operating the imaging system at the patient site and make state of the art diagnostic imaging as well as interventional imaging available to people and places that do not have adequate medical imaging now.”

Finally, here is a link to a short video (2 minutes and 30 seconds), in which Rubinsky tells how his team conceived and developed “a new device that uses cellphones to make medical imaging much cheaper and more accessible to the poor.” (Video produced by Roxanne Makasdjian, UC Berkeley Media Relations).

Using search for analyzing social and cultural trends

The search engines have become an integrated part of our lives. Each and every day billions of searches are made all over the world, reflecting stories of work and leisure, strife and passion, and the interests of millions of Internet searchers.

If you could tap into this enormous amount of data, you could draw maps of fashion, cultural trends, political shifts and anything people are concerned about right now.

The search engine databases are kept under lock and key. The search engine companies hate the thought of loosing the trust of their users. Nevertheless, some aggregate data are available, and on this page your find links to some of the search trend sources found on the Web.

Google Zeitgeist and beyond

Google has a service called Google Zeitgeist that brings up weekly top 10 lists of the most popular searches in several countries and world wide.

With Google Trends, you can compare the world’s interest in your favorite topics. Enter up to five topics and see how often they’ve been searched for on Google over time.

Lycos has a weekly top 50 list, while Yahoo presents various search trends at Yahoo Buzz.

Blogs, bookmarks and folksonomies

Note also that the growth of social networking and bookmarking sites has given as a new wealth of search trend data.

There are actually companies out there that monitoring and analyzing fashion and trends on the basis of social media such as blogs and discussion forums

Some statistics are free, though. The blog search engine Technorati will, for instance, give you a list of the most talked about topics in the blogosphere right now.

Site popularity

There are actually no trustworthy numbers on what sites are the most popular at any given time. Alexa, which bases its data on the habits of its Alexa toolbar users, may give you a certain indication though.

For these and other web trend sources, see the categories on this page.

Popular search terms in search engine marketing

Reading lists of the most popular search queries is entertaining. Social scientists ought to love the stuff. So far, however, it is the marketing people who has made the best use of this search information.

The search trends tell them what people find interesting right now, making it possible to adapt product and service development to what’s fashionable or upcoming.

This certainly applies to search engine marketing experts as well. Do you want to know what kind of affiliate program to go for and what product to sell? Look at what people search for and make sites and web pages covering these topics.

Om Malik wrote at GigaOm, “If Yahoo is turning to Jajah for Voice on IM, then AOL wants to offer others an ability to integrate AIM Call Out service via its Open Voice APIs into softphones, as well as SIP-enabled hardware and cell phones with Wi-Fi connectivity. AIM Call Out is a pay-as-you-go outbound voice calling service built right into AIM.” He continued, “Jajah, AOL Open Voice, Ribbit and scores of others are taking a platform approach to VoIP, hoping that adding voice to applications will drive up minute volume and turn them into a viable business.”

Why bog down system resources with multiple IM clients? I will say AOL has done a good job of beefing up the feature-set of AIM, but one has to wonder if Skype’s momentum is unstoppable.” The piece continues, “In any event, Steve Murphy, Senior Vice President, AOL said, ‘By opening up our voice communications gateway to developers we’re furthering the mission of AIM which is to facilitate the world’s real-time conversations. We’re building on the popularity of the Open AIM program and opening up the AIM Call Out platform, enabling open standards voice communication services to proliferate in the marketplace.’”

I suppose it’s no surprise. After all, there are plenty of affinity networks out there already, social networks for people who went to this college, or who play that game or who like to dress up as giraffes. So why not throw dating and high IQs into the exclusivity mix? Of course, as anyone who’s ever dated a smart person knows, intelligence isn’t any kind of guarantee of a good date. Sure, smart people generally prefer to date other smart people because it probably makes for better conversation, and the potential earning power is greater. On the other hand, would you really want to date someone who would be inclined to limit their partner trolling to a site that restricts anyone who doesn’t pass an IQ test? Perhaps this was actually someone’s clever notion of how to wall off a really annoying demographic from the rest of the dating pool.”

Quoting from itnews

“A new dating site caters exclusively for “intelligent” people and requires potential members to pass an IQ test in order to sign up.

Mensa restricts membership to the top two per cent of the IQ bracket, but IntelligentPeople.com will include the top 15 per cent.

The site’s developers said that people with an IQ in this range are “highly intelligent” and communicate and interact best with other intelligent people. <a href="http://www.intelligentpeople.com/"title="IntelligentPeople.com" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.intelligentpeople.com/');">IntelligentPeople.com hopes to give these people the opportunity to meet and form relationships with similar individuals, regardless of location, education and social status.
“Intelligent people usually want a partner who is also intelligent. Everyone wants someone they can talk to,” said Trine Jensen, founder of IntelligentPeople.com. At general dating sites you have to spend time and energy sorting profiles to find the ones that match your criteria. At IntelligentPeople.com we already make that sorting for you.”

The IQ test required for admission is a multiple choice, pattern recognition test consisting of black and white images and is designed to test intelligence while minimising cultural or educational biases. The site also has a more general community section designed to help members meet other people with high IQs, find a business partner or make new friends.”

Speaking at the Web 2.0 Expo here Thursday, Yahoo CTO Ari Balogh revealed how the company is transforming itself into an open and social platform from the ground up. It is opening its Web platform to developers and moving closer to a Facebook-style social networking concept. Ari Balogh also said that while Yahoo already has open APIs for some services, it will expand the open API concept to other areas and make it more consistent for developers, while boosting the ’social’ aspect of its services for its members.

“We are taking open to a whole other place,” Balogh said. “We are rewiring Yahoo from the inside out with a developer platform that will open up the assets of Yahoo in a way never done before, making the consumer experience social throughout and provide hooks to developers.” He noted that Yahoo has 10 billion latent connections across its properties, such as mail, messenger and fantasy sports.

Balogh discussed the technical architecture–known as YOS, or Yahoo Open Strategy–including an application platform that will allow developers to create apps for consumers to keep their data protected and to chose what data to share and with whom. In addition, Yahoo will unify all profiles for users and developers, which will allow the company to leverage the 10 billion relations and 500 million users to create the social graph of relationships and to manage the event stream.

“We are not creating another social network. We will rewire the entire experience to make it social. We don’t think of social as a destination but as a dimension,” Balogh said. Along with Google and MySpace, Yahoo is a member of the <a href="http://www.opensocial.org/"class="external-link" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.opensocial.org/');">OpenSocial Foundation, which is developing a specification for building social applications.

The underpinnings of Yahoo’s effort include development tools, an application platform, a social platform that unifies all profiles throughout Yahoo (again, like Facebook or MySpace, this is a social graph that lets users make connections and view events) and the total rewiring of properties to make all this possible.

Yahoo’s new architecture, called YOS (Yahoo Open Strategy) proves that the Internet is made of tubes (Source: Yahoo)

The heady plans are smart but, quite likely, come too late.

Measured by traffic, some of the sites even top the charts for their categories.” AOL “still hasn’t translated the surge in visits into higher ad revenue. But the news is positive for the Time Warner Inc. unit, which has struggled with another initiative — building AOL into a major digital ad-sales firm.” The content push “is part of AOL’s bid to reinvent itself as an ad-supported Web company following its August 2006 decision to make its Internet-access service free. Visits to AOL’s Web sites slowed as a side-effect of that decision. … To draw visitors back, AOL redesigned sites in the news, sports and health categories. It also created a half-dozen new sites that don’t use the AOL name, such as a technology-focused site called Switched, a hip-hop site called BlackVoices, and a Web trend tracker called Urlesque.com, as well as Asylum. Dropping its name was an acknowledgement that the brand wasn’t hip enough for the consumers AOL was trying to attract.” AOL “also adopted some common tricks of the trade, such as making its sites appear higher in search-engine results.”
<a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/story.aspx?guid=%7bE0A7DBB5-BD9C-4AC0-BD3C-9AA307692703%7d&siteid=rss"name="S1Time_Warner_To">Time Warner To Announce Quarterly Results On Wednesday. MarketWatch (4/24, Wilkerson) reported, “Analysts will be anticipating higher profits at several large media conglomerates such as Time Warner Inc., Comcast Corp. and Viacom Inc. next week, but will also be on the lookout for signs that a shaky U.S. economy is having an adverse effect on spending by advertisers and consumers.” Time Warner announces its quarterly results Wednesday morning, and analysts see the company “earning 23 cents a share on revenue of $11.4 billion. In the year-earlier quarter, excluding discontinued operations and special items - including the effect of accounting changes — the company would have earned 22 cents a share on sales of $11.2 billion.” Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes “will surely have to field questions about speculation that AOL could hook up with Yahoo. … As usual, analysts will be monitoring advertising growth at AOL, which has been declining for several quarters.” Time Warner “has pointed out that AOL has discontinued several ‘nonprofitable’ sponsorships, and that ad demand is shifting to third-party networks.”

Would I want to know what my friends are doing right now? Not really. Not in 140 Characters. Yes, you can find out what your friends are doing right this minute. But seriously…do you care?

It’s hard to explain why Twitter is so popular. Is it for self-gratification that I twitter (and imagine that the world is reading my crap?).

I just don’tget it (of course, if I’m Julia Roberts, twitter might make sense. But she might be not savvy enough to get it).

Twitter’s chatty nature and intuitive usability has resulted in instant popularity, and today Twitter is hangin’ in the inner most circle of the tech-savvy in-crowd. So much so that when there were outages last week, so many people went bonkers. Why? What am I missing?

“had a hard day at work”

“reading ‘wired’ ”

“came back from a jog”

“yawn”

Yes, yawn!

(But some of them *are* funny.)

Twitter is the new kid in the block. Now let us see them make some money. They survived the first year, how will it go for the company from here? There are already copycats out there, and technologically, it is not a rocket that it can’t be copied. It’s going to be fun to watch them for the next 6 months.

BTW, Will I twitter? Thanks, but I prefer to blog.

Blaine Cook, lead architect at red-hot, sometimes-down Twitter, has left the company. Blaine describes his departure at an “amicable” one.

I left Twitter just over two weeks ago. It’s an amicable change; Twitter’s architecture is at a good point for them to pursue stability and growth, and I’m looking forward to a new challenge after nearly three years of working with Odeo and Twitter. I will likely continue as an advisor to Twitter. I can’t yet talk about the specifics of my decision, but I am moving to the UK so that my partner can pursue her career. We’re Canadian and her visa makes it impossible for her to work in the US, and at the same time there are rich web communities emerging outside of the Bay Area.

In the hothouse world of tech blogging, Twitter is becoming as well-known for its outages as for the service itself, so no doubt there will be a lot of dot-connecting here. But can the failures be all pinned down to one person? I am not sure.

But it is a good chance for Twitter to make up lost ground. Else, there are many waiting just round the corner.
