Korean computer engineers are introducing a new digital music format that has a six-channel audio equalizer and separate controls on the sound volume for each musical instrument, such as guitar, drum, base and voice. The new format, which has a file extension format of MT9 and a commercial title of “Music 2.0″, is poised to replace the popular MP3 file format as the de-facto standard of the digital music source, its inventors say.

The MT9 technology was selected as a candidate item for the new digital music standard at the last regular meeting of Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG), the international body of the digital music and video industry.

Ham says that the music industry should change its attitude to the market as music is becoming a digital service, rather than a physical product. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are both interested in equipping their mobile phones with an MT9 player and their first commercial products are likely to debut early next year, he said.

Unlike other digital formats exclusively used by big companies, Audizen (the venture company behind the development) allows users to copy the MT9 files, making it a more attractive format. “It’s like having a CD or cassette tape. Once you buy it, you can lend it to your friends. We don’t want to be too fussy about DRM (digital right management),” said Ham Seung-chul, chief of Audizen.

Nine out of ten businesses that have launched virtual worlds saw them fail in 18 months or less, according to a recent research from Gartner, which faulted companies for getting hung up on the technology rather than thinking about how people use it.

“Businesses have learned some hard lessons,” says Steve Prentice, vice president and fellow at Gartner. “They need to realize that virtual worlds mark the transition from Web pages to Web places and a successful virtual presence starts with people, not physics.”

The adoption of virtual worlds for the enterprise began picking up steam this year, buoyed by the success of Second Life, a 3-D environment in the consumer space where people interact with one another as avatars (virtual representations of themselves).

Other consultancies, such as Forrester, predicted virtual worlds would rival the internet in overall importance to businesses.

Despite the high failure rate the research did indicate virtual worlds will catch on as companies understand what types of use cases work best for implementing them. By 2012, around 70 percent of organizations will have set up private virtual worlds, Gartner predicts. Virtual worlds set up for employees to collaborate internally will have a high success rate because of “lower expectations, clearer objectives and better constraints.”

The other upside to virtual worlds for the enterprise: cost. According to Gartner, the cost of implementing a corporate virtual platform averages $50,000, and cheaper trials can cost $5,000. The report argues this low-cost will encourage more experimentation by businesses.

As if warfare weren’t already creepy enough, BAE Systems, a British defense company, has released a promotional video of robotic spiders, dragonflies and snakes it is developing to aid soldiers in combat zones. The robotic creatures are being funded by a $38 million contract with the U.S. Army that is part of a massive, and costly, effort to modernize the weaponry of the armed forces. The robots will slither and crawl around corners, into caves, and through booby-trapped streets, sending images back to screens in a command center or to a screen mounted on a soldiers wrist.

The purpose is to “extend the warfighter’s senses and reach, providing operational capabilities that would otherwise be costly, impossible, or deadly to achieve,” says Joseph Mait, MAST cooperative agreement manager for the Army Research Laboratory.

Other remote controlled devices are in the works as well, such as the unmanned drones that are currently used for bombing raids and reconnaissance. The hope is that using these robots will cut down on the number of casualties suffered by U.S. forces, and possibly civilians, while improving the accuracy of missile attacks and raids. However the potential for misuse of these robots, such as spying on citizens or other governments, is straight out of some sci-fi movie.

In any case we hope we never see one of these little creatures on our windowsill. [Source: Daily Mail UK]

“What we are doing is providing an enhanced awareness for soldiers, basically an extension to their eyes and ears,” he said.

“The idea is to get a number of these working together – some tiny, some maybe up to a foot in length, and all going into a building together carrying out different tasks. Eventually we hope to have animals flying and slithering.

“The five-year programme has just started but we could have them with soldiers within six months, and then continue to develop the concept as the project goes along.”

Despite the high-tech gadgetry involved, BAE Systems insists once production is in full swing, each bug will cost no more than £100 to produce.

Citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal reported early Friday that the world’s largest software maker may be preparing to go straight to Internet pioneer Yahoo’s shareholders. An announcement was “likely” to come Friday, according to the report, though the newspaper said its sources cautioned that Microsoft may delay.

Chief Executive Steve Ballmer told employees in a company assembly Thursday that he knows how much he’d spend to buy Yahoo and accelerate his company’s Internet play.

“We’re willing to pay for that at some level, and beyond that level we’re not willing to pay for it. I know exactly what I think Yahoo is worth to me,” the executive said. “I won’t go a dime above, and I will go to what I think it’s worth if that gets the deal done.”

But he didn’t offer a figure, and he didn’t say whether Microsoft is considering raising its unsolicited bid, worth $44.6 billion at the time it was made in early February.

The offer is currently worth about $42.4 billion, or $29.48 per share, based on Microsoft Corp.’s closing stock price Thursday. Yahoo Inc. has rejected the offer, saying it undervalues the company. Microsoft’s board has been considering whether to raise the bid to as much as $33 per share, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Ballmer didn’t provide any new insight into the company’s efforts to buy the Silicon Valley pioneer during the meeting at Microsoft’s Redmond, Wash., headquarters, but he did indicate that an end to months of speculation was near.

“We ought to announce something in relatively short order,” Ballmer told employees.

His comments were first reported by Silicon Alley Insider, an online technology news site, and confirmed by a Microsoft spokesman.

Ballmer added that buying Yahoo is just one of many moving parts in the software maker’s strategy to compete with Google Inc. in search and Web advertising, and that if neither a friendly nor a hostile deal “look good,” he’s willing to walk away.

Microsoft’s board met Wednesday but reached no decision on a next step, the Journal reported. The software maker had given Yahoo until last weekend to agree to a deal or face the prospect of an ugly proxy fight.

Meanwhile, Yahoo is exploring a possible advertising partnership with Internet search leader Google Inc. or a merger with the online operations of Time Warner Inc.’s AOL as possible defenses if Microsoft tries a hostile takeover.

Impressed by a two-week test completed last month, Yahoo could firm up a long-term deal within a week, according to the Journal. Any alliance between Yahoo and Google would face intense antitrust scrutiny, however, because the two companies control more than 80 percent of the U.S. market for search advertising.

Yahoo and Google hope to allay those concerns by structuring their deal so their rivals, including Microsoft, could participate in an auction-based system, the Journal said.

In January, everything went a little crazy because of a Facebook application that (if you believed the hype) force installed Zango, hijacked your PC, set fire to your house, killed your pets…..well, you get the idea. In actual fact, the truth of the matter was a little more convoluted. All I could see was that this application opened up a popup, which (every now and again) would just happen to be an advert for Zango. Hardly Earth shattering, but of course it did switch people on to the fact that they needed to be careful which applications they gave permission to access their data while on Facebook.

Well, a few months on and it looks like the BBC had a coder create an application (in three hours or less) that could swipe a whole pile of data on both you and your friends, before mailing it back home to base. I can’t stress enough - when it comes to social networking sites, NEVER post anything you wouldn’t feel comfortable posting on an otherwise open and accessible site such as your blog, personal website, whatever. I have pages on Myspace, Facebook, Orkut and a whole bunch of others - and there is NOTHING on them that you couldn’t find elsewhere. There is no hidden treasure trove of data to mine, and so I don’t care what happens to it because it’s all out there in the public domain anyway. This is what I’ve been telling people for the longest time, and it works.

The hacker in this case has been able set up a malicious application that can steal details of not only your information but the people you’re connected with. This is because in Facebook, applications have permission to ‘walk the tree’ of your friend contact details, letting the apps do things like populate the list of people for you to forward to, when you choose to “<a href="http://conversationhub.com/2008/04/03/forward-thisand-see-what-happens/"onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://conversationhub.com/2008/04/03/forward-thisand-see-what-happens/');" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://conversationhub.com/2008/04/03/forward-thisand-see-what-happens/');">forward this and see what happens.”

We have discovered a way to steal the personal details of you and all your Facebook friends without you knowing.

The article is worth reading. Wow, good job British hax0rz! I won’t say “the sky is falling” because this has been pretty well-known among the geek-o-rati for a long time. BBC notes MySpace apps run on MySpace’s servers, giving MySpace a much clearer idea of what an application is doing with the data.

Perhaps the media attention this is sure to draw will move FB to a more secure model. One can hope.

University of Southern California (USC) researchers are developing several parts of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Deep Green program. Their efforts are intended to help commanders on the battlefield to anticipate enemy moves. ‘The system interweaves anticipatory planning with adaptive execution to help the commander think ahead, identify when a plan is going awry and prepare options before they are needed.’ Deep Green will be able to add computing resources on the spot if the problem faced by a commander is too difficult. Two teams at ISC are developing components for this program. But read more…

The figure above describes the basic system architecture of Deep Green, comprised of the Commander’s Associate (with three sub-components, the Sketch to Plan, Automated Options Generation, and the Sketch to Decide), Blitzkrieg, and Crystal Ball. This illustration was picked from a 2007 DARPA’s document about the Deep Green Approach. Some components might have slightly changed since 2007.

But what exactly is Deep Green? “Deep Green is a next-generation, commander-centered battle command and decision support technology that interleaves anticipatory planning with adaptive execution to help the commander think ahead, identify when a plan is going awry, and prepare options — before they are needed.” This program is managed by Colonel John R. “Buck” Surdu who holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Texas A&M University.

According to the USC news release mentioned above, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering’s Information Sciences Institute (ISI) will receive $7.6 million from DARPA for the two projects it’s heading.

The first one is headed by Paul Cohen, a professor in computer science and director of the Center for Research on Unexpected Events (CRUE), with the help of research scientist Yu-Han Chang. Cohen noted that even if the program was named Deep Green by reference to the IBM’s Deep Blue chess playing program, a battlefield and a chess board are very different.

Here are some quotes from Cohen picked from a previous news release from the USC Viterbi School of Engineering News, “Deep Green Models Rapid Change for Combat Commanders” (March 31, 2008). “‘Chess is a special, artificial situation,’ Cohen notes. ‘The pieces occupy fixed positions for long intervals, then move instantaneously.’ The battlefield is a very different place, Cohen says. There, units on both sides are in continuous motion. Moreover, chess players can see the whole board, whereas commanders have limited visibility of the battlefield. A program like Deep Blue visualizes where pieces might move in the future, based on the moves possible for knight, bishop, and so on. The problem for Deep Green is that time and location change continuously, so the very notion of a ’state of the board’ needs a new formulation.”

Their goal is to “take Cohen and Chang’s work out of laboratory situations by finding ways to put the huge computational resources necessary into a system that Cohen could actually be used in chaotic wartime conditions.”

Here are additional details. “Chang and Cohen’s program, called Adversarial Continuous Time and Space Search, (ACCTS), represents collections of interacting combatants (units) by what are called ‘fluents,’ a concept close to the time-space operators called vectors familiar to first-year physics students.” Davis and Lucas are working to create “a system that links to portable electronics; a very efficient, bandwidth-saving, distributed computing platform and an effective method for assessing local computation and communications limitations. If it can be done — if they can create a very large trans-globally distributed computer network that still requires very little bandwidth, the Deep Green system can be made scalable — ‘it will run effectively on one processor to 20 processors on scene, or hundreds within the battlespace, or thousands across the globe,’ Lucas explained.”

The researchers acknowledge that many problems remain to be solved and that the Deep Green program will not be used on the battlefield before a few years.

Formula One motor racing is no longer about famous car marques, its about precise science and using technology to shave another fraction of a second off a lap time, and Linux is playing a pivotal role in helping the race teams achieve this.

As a technical sport motor racing demands of its participants a close understanding of the technologies that can help them. F1 motor racing is probably second only to the aerospace industry in the application of aerodynamic simulation and wind tunnel technology. It is a testament to the rapid advance of Linux in high performance computing that most teams in Formula 1 have been using Linux systems in their aerodynamic and engine workshops for a number of years.

“Formula One is a product excellence business that’s all about innovation and technology,” says Jonathan Neale, the managing director of McLaren Racing. “We’re competing for first place in an environment where the difference between first and tenth is about 0.6 seconds, so we’re constantly seeking fractions of a second in performance improvement. On average we’ll make a change to the car every 20 minutes during the course of a season, and to do that, simulation is vital in making efficient changes to the car.” Back in the factory, McLaren uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis running on Linux on SGI Altix high performance computers to simulate and predict the car’s behaviour.

Motor racing wasn’t always like this. Once upon a time those daring young men diced with death and each other in their flying machines, with little more than grease blown overalls, a loose flying-helmet, oil-splattered goggles and a V8 engine between them and the oncoming road. The skill of the driver was everything.

Times have changed. Modern motor racing in the 21st century is a team sport, and the difference in performance between the front of the grid and the also rans is measured in hundredths of a second. Every year the cars get faster, the lap records come down, and the drivers and cars reach new limits of endurance and performance, despite a regular tightening of the rules for the sake of safety and increased competitiveness. Every new rule that is imposed to slow the cars down or level the playing field becomes a challenge for the designers, to readjust the vital balance of weight, material, power, downforce, grip, and traction.

A team of engineers at the University of California at Berkeley has developed a technique for transmitting medical images via cellphones. This potentially could bring medical imaging to the ‘three-quarters of the world’s population which has no access to ultrasounds, X-rays, magnetic resonance images, and other medical imaging technology.’ The lead researcher said that this new system would make imaging technology inexpensive and accessible in non-industrialized countries. As medical images are usually pretty large, I was a little bit skeptical when I first read the UC Berkeley news release. But as the researchers have found a way to reduce these images to a mere kilobytes, it can actually be feasible. But read more about this brilliant idea…

You can see above the system configuration used for “the breast cancer tumors patient self-test screening. Outlined arrows indicate optional reporting of results to the patient.” (Credit: UC Berkeley, link to a larger version)

And you can see above how this technique could be used for breast cancer detection. On the left, you can see “the DAD [data acquisition device] of the system with two types of gel representing a breast cancer tumor surrounded by normal breast tissue.” The right part shows “econstructed result as it was displayed on the screen of a commercial cellular phone. Warm colors represent higher conductivity regions that are typical of breast cancer lesions.” (Credit: UC Berkeley, link to a larger version)

This research has been led by Boris Rubinsky, professor of bioengineering and mechanical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, who also works at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. By the way, this university also has issued its own news release about this imaging technique. Rubinsky worked with PhD student Yair Granot and post-doctoral researcher Antoni Ivorra.

Before going further, let’s first look at how medical imaging is done today. “Most medical imaging devices, said Rubinsky, consist of three essential components: the data acquisition hardware that is connected to the patient, the image processing software and a monitor to display the image. When these components are combined into one unit, machine parts often become redundant, substantially increasing the cost of the device, he said.”

This leads him to break this model. “Rubinsky and his team came up with the novel idea of physically separating these components so that the most complicated element — the processing software used to reconstruct the raw data into a meaningful image — can reside at an offsite central location, presumably in a large center where resources are available for its operation and maintenance. This central location would be used to service multiple remote sites where far simpler machines collect the raw data from the patients.”

And this where the cellphone comes in. “The phone, hooked up to the data acquisition device, would transmit the raw data to the central server where the information would be used to create an image. The server would then relay the image back to the cell phone, where it can be viewed on the cell phone’s screen. ‘This design significantly lowers the cost of medical imaging because the apparatus at the patient site is greatly simplified, and there is no need for personnel highly trained in imaging processing,’ said Ivorra.”

This new medical imaging technique has been published on April 30, 2008 in the open access journal Public Library of Science ONE (PLoS ONE) under the title “A New Concept for Medical Imaging Centered on Cellular Phone Technology.” Here is a link to this article, from which the above images have been picked.

Please read it to discover the potential limitations, such as cellphone compatibility. Here is the final summary. “This study demonstrates the feasibility of using a cellular phone as an integrated part of a medical imaging system in which a robust and independent DAD is connected to the imaging processing site through the cell phone. We believe that this concept has the potential for decreasing the complexity of operating the imaging system at the patient site and make state of the art diagnostic imaging as well as interventional imaging available to people and places that do not have adequate medical imaging now.”

Finally, here is a link to a short video (2 minutes and 30 seconds), in which Rubinsky tells how his team conceived and developed “a new device that uses cellphones to make medical imaging much cheaper and more accessible to the poor.” (Video produced by Roxanne Makasdjian, UC Berkeley Media Relations).

AIM Call Out is a pay-as-you-go outbound voice calling service built right into AIM.” He continued, “Jajah, AOL Open Voice, Ribbit and scores of others are taking a platform approach to VoIP, hoping that adding voice to applications will drive up minute volume and turn them into a viable business.”

I will say AOL has done a good job of beefing up the feature-set of AIM, but one has to wonder if Skype’s momentum is unstoppable.” The piece continues, “In any event, Steve Murphy, Senior Vice President, AOL said, ‘By opening up our voice communications gateway to developers we’re furthering the mission of AIM which is to facilitate the world’s real-time conversations. We’re building on the popularity of the Open AIM program and opening up the AIM Call Out platform, enabling open standards voice communication services to proliferate in the marketplace.’”
