Aside from a massive cost saving this will also allow easy email access outside of schools plus access to Gmail’s great spam filter system and other applications.

Google partner SMS Management and Technology has emerged as the leading bidder to supply the NSW Department of Education with 1.5 million student email services using a customised version of the search giant’s Gmail service. This will be one of the largest private deployments of Gmail in the world.

The win is Google’s second major victory in the academic sector after Macquarie University signed up for Gmail in September last year. It could have massive implications for the Australian software market, as it places Gmail’s online word processing software, Google Docs, in a strong position to challenge Microsoft’s Office software suite in the education sector.

The education department’s Gmail roll-out will increase current email storage allocated to students by a multiple of 170 times from 35MB to 6GB. Gmail is hosted offshore and the university chose not to extend the service to staff due to concerns that it would generate excessive bandwidth bills retrieving messages.

Google plans to formally unveil its new product — AdPlanner — which will provide Web analytics to media buyers looking to place display ads on the Web. The service, leaked on the Web site of the Advertising Research Foundation on Monday, was to be introduced at the organization’s conference on audience measurement on Tuesday.
An exec briefed on the announcement told the New York Times’ Bits blog that the tool will help agencies identify where their target audience is most active on the Web. AdPlanner will harvest data directly from participating Web sites, and combine it with search and third-party data. Bits notes there will be some overlap with Google’s Trends for Websites, a service announced last week, which sounds like it does much of the same work.

Nokia has purchased Plazes, a social networking provider based in Berlin. From the release:

Nokia and Plazes today announced an agreement for Nokia to acquire substantially all assets of Plazes, a privately-owned start-up company of 13 people with its principal operations in Berlin. Plazes provides a context-aware social-activity service that people can use to plan, record, and share their social activities: why they are at a given location at a given time, whether in the past, present or future.

“This acquisition helps Nokia to accelerate its vision of bringing people and places closer together, in line with our broader services strategy,” said Niklas Savander, Head of Nokia Services & Software. “In addition to the key assets, through this acquisition Nokia will bring on a visionary team with an advanced understanding of social-activity services, as well as the technical ability to further develop this area.”

By acquiring Plazes, Nokia will be able to extend its context-based service offering with social presence and time-based activity planning features. Plazes adds the elements of “place” and “time” to social networking through features that allow people to alert friends of their activity and location; review their own and others’ past activities; share their experiences and make plans with friends, who are then able to respond
with comments and suggestions as well as their own location information.

“Nokia shares our vision of the social activity space and of how we can together develop the service that Plazes provides today,” said Felix Petersen, co-founder of Plazes. “We feel proud of what the Plazes team has
achieved so far with its pioneering work in context-aware services and we feel even more excited about what’s to come next.”

The agreement is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in the third quarter 2008. After closing, Plazes will become part of Nokia’s Services & Software unit.

Here’s more on the acquisition from the Plazes blog.

A Dutch charity is funding an open-source project to design smart card software that offers stronger protection of personal data in light of security vulnerabilities found with cards used today.

NLnet Foundation will give €150,000 (US$234,000) to Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands, for the project, which will run through 2010, said Valer Mischenko, the foundation’s general director.

The research and the code will be published for peer review, an open-source development model that can offer a stronger security model than undocumented, proprietary systems that dominate the smart-card market, Mischenko said. Companies will be able to use the software in future products, as it will be licensed under the GNU General Public License.

The need for more secure systems is clear. Researchers revealed last year security vulnerabilities in the Mifare Classic RFID chip, which is used in up to 2 billion smart cards used for building access and public transportation systems worldwide.

The researchers figured out how the Mifare Classic’s encryption algorithm worked, allowing them to obtain the 48-bit encryption keys the cards used. With that information, it’s possible to create a clone of the card or, in some cases, add money to the card for public transport systems, said Bart Jacobs, information security professor at Radboud University.

The Mifare card chips “are from the 90s,” Jacobs said. “At the time when they were developed, there was little computing power on those chips.”

Using more complex encryption algorithms requires more computing power, which potentially means that a person could have to stand at a turnstile longer during a transaction. One of the aims of the new research is to strengthen that encryption but still have the transaction take a second or less, Jacobs said.

“You don’t want to stand before a gate 10 seconds before it opens,” Jacobs said.

Another aim is increased privacy. London’s transport agency, Transport for London (TFL), uses Mifare chips in its contactless payment system known as the Oyster card. Customers have a couple of options when getting the card: they can register it with TFL, which offers benefits such as free replacement if the card lost, or buy an unregistered one.

If the card is registered, some of the person’s travel record is stored by TFL databases, Jacobs said. That’s a potential privacy risk if the data is misused. Jacobs said the project also aims to create card that can still offer special, personalised benefits for the rider but also not unnecessarily transmit more information than needed to a centralised database.

“Our point is that you can get these benefits without sacrificing privacy,” Jacobs said. “We’d like to try this out.”

A person’s public transport history could also be used for marketing or other commercial purposes which may suit some interests but not necessarily be in the best interest of privacy, Jacobs said.

“In our improved card, the card behaves more like a paper ticket,” Jacobs said. “It is electronic, but hides its identity and only says to a gate ‘I’m allowed to make that trip’.”

The research, headed up by Jacobs and Wouter Teepe, will start in July in the university’s Digital Security Group. Jacobs said within about six months the researchers should have a good idea if a stronger algorithm will be technically feasible and practical in use.

On Saturday, it will be exactly 60 years since the world’s first stored-program, electronic, digital computer flickered into life in a laboratory at the University of Manchester.

The computer was immediately nicknamed ‘Baby’ — something of a misnomer, since it was an enormous device. Its size is illustrated by a picture of the device (below) that recently turned up in an old file at the university.

But the picture only shows one part of Baby, as university press officer Alex Waddington explained: “There was a full panoramic shot of Baby, which was made by photographing it bit by bit, and then fitting the pictures together in one long picture. I’ve checked all the material we published back then and also the clippings from the media, and I can’t see the full panoramic shot anywhere, so it seems it was never released.”Crucially, the picture does not show the output device. The output was, in fact, “read directly from the face of a CRT [cathode ray tube]“, Waddington said.

The Small-Scale Experimental Machine, as Baby was officially named, successfully executed its first program on 21 June, 1948.

By today’s standards, Baby was an extremely primitive machine. In modern terms, the prototype Baby had a random access memory (RAM) of just 32 locations or ‘words’. Each word in the RAM consisted of 32 bits (binary digits) and a total of 1,024 bits of memory. According to Waddington, the computing speed was 1.2 milliseconds per instruction, equivalent to a clock speed of slightly under 1kHz, more than two million times slower than a typical desktop processor today.

Waddington pointed out that an 80GB Apple iPod “is capable of storing 640 million times more information than the original Baby”.

Baby was built using metal racks from the Post Office along with hundreds of valves, and the keyboard was a series of push buttons and switches, mounted vertically.

All this year, the University of Manchester will be <a href="http://www.digital60.org/"title="Digital 60 - University of Manchester" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.digital60.org/');">hosting a series of events to celebrate the birthday of Baby and the work of its inventors, Tom Kilburn and Freddie Williams.

The world’s first stored-program computer, Baby, was so big that only a detail of it can be shown here

Merge tracking information currently can include the “natural history” of a path. One situation where this happens is when creating a branch from trunk at a certain revision X and later merging all changes from branch back to trunk, without explicitly limiting the merge range and without using the
--reintegrate
option. Afterwards, the merge tracking information on trunk will list revisions before X. This does no harm to future merge operations, but thereafter
svn log -g
on trunk will report these revisions from the “natural history”, which is typically not expected. This is because
svn log -g
uses the merge tracking information from previous revisions (not only from HEAD).

Note that this should not be a problem with release branches (also called “maintenance branches”), because one typically does not merge them back to trunk. Instead, recommended practice is for new changes to enter on trunk and be ported outward to the branches that need the changes. However, you could run into this problem with a feature branch, which would be merged back to trunk once, at the end of the branch’s lifetime.

One workaround is to correct the merge tracking information before committing the merged revision, by reverse merging the “natural history” information:
svn merge --record-only -rX:1
. Another solution is to avoid this situation entirely, by explicitly specifying merge ranges in the first place, e.g.: -rX:HEAD. See this mail for more information.

When merging a feature branch, the best solution is to use the
--reintegrate
option; then this problem won’t happen in the first place.

We had already mentioned the fact that, despite the AP’s complaints that bloggers quoting less than 100 words were violating fair use, the AP had a long history of <a href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20080617/2052581436.shtml"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20080617/2052581436.shtml');">quoting more than 100 words from bloggers - and not even linking back to the original blog.

Now, in a bit of ultimate irony, the AP’s <a href="http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/A/AP_BLOGGERS?SITE=WIJANSECTION=HOME&%23038;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/A/AP_BLOGGERS?SITE=WIJANSECTION=HOME&%23038;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT');">own article about this brouhaha quoted (without linking) twenty-two words from TechCrunch. That’s 18 words more than the supposed four word “limit” the AP has suggested. With an ironic chance that wide, TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington couldn’t resist, and asked his lawyer <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/06/19/the-ap-has-violated-my-copyright-and-i-demand-justice/"rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/06/19/the-ap-has-violated-my-copyright-and-i-demand-justice/');">to send a DMCA takedown notice to the Associated Press, along with a bill for $12.50 (directly off the AP’s own pricing schedule). He admits that it’s ridiculous, but that’s what his actions are designed to present. By law, the AP should be required to takedown the content before filing a response — though, since it’s filing the response to itself, then perhaps it won’t need to takedown the content. Either way, this helps illustrate the insanity of the entire situation.

OSGi, SOA, JavaScript improvements top list of enhancements in 23 projects

The Eclipse Foundation next week is set to offer its annual simultaneous release of open-source project updates, this time called the Ganymede Release and featuring improvements in the core OSGI-based component model and SOA tools.

All told, 23 projects are being upgraded in the Ganymede release train, ranging from the main Eclipse Project, featuring the Java IDE, to STP (SOA Tools Platform Project). Ganymede is to take flight on June 25. Release trains in 2007 and 2006 were called Europa and Callisto, respectively. All have been named after moons of Jupiter.

Highlighted in Ganymede are improvements to Equinox, the OSGi component model used in the main Eclipse Project, which includes the base IDE. “This is how different components of Eclipse talk to each other,” said Ian Skerrett, Eclipse director of marketing.

A new provisioning platform in Equinox, called Provisioning Platform (p2), offers an improved mechanism for updates to installed or deployed applications, such as a new component to be distributed to the installed base. P2 is a reengineering of Update Manager tool.

“Basically, it simplifies the whole update process and provisioning process,” said Skerrett. “The original one required a number of manual steps to ensure you have all the required plugins.”

Dependencies between plugins are resolved.

Eclipses’s effort to improve on Update Manager was lauded by an industry analyst.

“Many people in the Eclipse community — including Eclipse project members — have been frustrated with the Update Manager of late, and it’d be great to see that problem taken care of,” analyst Michael Cote of RedMonk, said. “In the meantime, companies like Genuitec have stepped in with [its] Pulse offering for Eclipse package management. But seeing what Eclipse proper has to offer will be fun.”

Security features also have been added to Equinox, including a facility called Secure Storage, providing encryption capabilities. If a developer, for example, were building an application on top of Equinox and needed to store a username and password, these would be kept in Secure Storage.

Support for Java Authentication Service is now in Equinox as well, enabling Web site visitors to be given different capabilities based on their level of authentication.

Tools for SOA development in Ganymede include a BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation) editor being added to STP. “Basically, it provides a visual tool for creating and editing BPMN,” the standard scripting process flows in SOA applications, said Skerrett.

Two other tools are debuting in STP: SCA Designer (Service Component Architecture), providing a graphical interface for developers to build composite applications using SCA, and Policy Editor, a collection of editors and validators for constructing and manipulating XML expressions that conform to the WS-Policy standard.

In the modeling space, Eclipse is providing GUI tools. The ECore Tools technology is part of the Eclipse Modeling Framework and enables developers to manage data models.

The SQL Query Builder tool enables visual programming of queries as opposed to manually programming them, Skerrett said. SQL Query Builder is part of the Eclipse Data Tools Platform project.

A JavaScript editor in the Eclipse Web Tools Platform (WTP) project extends the IDE to enable JavaScript development. Developers can build Web applications based on AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML).

Also featured in Ganymede are bug fixes and various enhancements to the different projects. Rich AJAX Platform features the ability to customize look and feel using CSS and the Presentation Factories concept. Eclipse Communication Framework Project offers real-time shared editing and other features for collaboration.

The BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools) project offers an improved JavaScript editor and debugger.

Eclipse has more than 95 projects underway, but only 23 were involved in Ganymede. “Each individual project [team] decides whether they want to participate,” Skerrett said.

Ganymede’s Web page can be found <a href="http://www.eclipse.org/ganymede/"class="regularArticleU" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.eclipse.org/ganymede/');">here.
“The OpenSUSE Project contributors, inside and outside Novell, have worked hard and should be very proud of this release. It sets the bar for what a Linux distribution should be.”

OpenSUSE 11.0 is also the first Linux distribution to include the 1.0 Banshee release, enabling users to manage and play back digital music and video content.

“The OpenSUSE Project is an important part of Novell’s Linux strategy and is one of the ways we demonstrate our commitment to the open source community,” said Roger Levy, senior vice president and general manager for open platform solutions at Novell.

“OpenSUSE serves as the foundation for our enterprise products and gives Novell an important opportunity to work closely with the community.”

The new version is <a href="http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_11.0"title="OpenSUSE 11.0" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_11.0');">available for download immediately. A full DVD image or Gnome and KDE live CDs enable users to run OpenSUSE from the CD without modifying their computer.

Mozilla security chief Window Snyder (left) has confirmed the existence of a serious code execution vulnerability in the brand-new Firefox 3.0 browser.

Snyder’s confirmation follows a public warning by TippingPoint’s ZDI (Zero Day Initiative) that the flaw could lead to PC takeover hijacks if a user simply surfs to a rigged Web site with Firefox.

On the Mozilla security blog, Snyder said the bug impacts Firefox versions 2.x and 3.0:

This issue is currently under investigation. To protect our users, the details of the issue will remain closed until a patch is made available. There is no public exploit, the details are private, and so the current risk to users is minimal.

At Mozilla we appreciate any report of security issues because that is how we make the browser stronger and more secure. The best way to keep Firefox users safe is to report the issues directly to Mozilla as TippingPoint has chosen to, and to wait to release details until a fix is available.

The vulnerability was sold to TippingPoint ZDI a few hours after Mozilla’s shipped the final release of Firefox 3.0. Also see this USA Today piece on Snyder’s efforts to harden Firefox against hacker attacks.

Pentaho Corp. has released its Linux-compatible, open source business intelligence (BI) software under a GNU General Public License Version 2 (GPLv2) license. The license applies to the version 2 alpha release of the Pentaho BI Platform, as well as future versions, says the company.

The Pentaho BI Platform is the foundational infrastructure that underlies Pentaho’s Open BI Suite. Previous versions had been released under the Mozilla Public License (MPL). The components that will now be licensed under GPL are the Platform engine core, engine services, engine security, repository, and UI foundation. The new licensing does not apply to modules such as Pentaho Analysis (Mondrian), Pentaho Data Integration (formerly Kettle), Pentaho Reporting (formerly JFreeReport), and Pentaho Data Mining (Weka), says Pentaho. However, in the future, Pentaho will require third-parties who want to contribute code to these components to release the code under GPL.

Pentaho BI Platform and Open BI Suite architecture (Click to see full image)

Pentaho bills its Open BI Suite as “the world’s most popular open source BI suite.” The software offers OLAP (on-line analytical processing) reporting, analysis, dashboards, data mining, and data integration features. Last Fall, Pentaho announced version 1.6, adding a BI metadata layer that lets IT develop intelligence road maps that business users can then use to build reports. It also added a thin-client AJAX-based reporting interface for streamlining the creation of ad hoc queries and reports without requiring input from IT.

Pentaho is providing a FLOSS (Free/Libre Open Source Software) exception to its GPL licenses, permitting Pentaho and other organizations that distribute the software under other specified Open Source Initiative (OSI) certified licenses to be exempt from some of the GPLv2 requirements. According to Pentaho, the FLOSS exception simplifies distribution.

In explaining its move to GPL, Pentaho cites a freshmeat.org statistic that more than 60 percent of open source projects tracked on the site are GPL-licensed. The company also noted the precedents set by other commercial open source vendors including MySQL, Alfresco, SugarCRM, as well as by Java and the Linux kernel, all of which are GPL-licensed projects.

More information on Pentaho’s new licensing policy may be found here.
